The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion – high resolution images from the Royal Collection Trust

The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace: 10 May – 6 October 2013

This exhibition explored the sumptuous costumes of British monarchs and their courtiers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through portraits in the Royal Collection. During this period fashion was central to court life and was an important way to display social status. Royalty and the elite were the tastemakers of the day, often directly influencing the styles of fashionable clothing.

The exhibition followed the changing fashions of the period, demonstrating the international proliferation of styles and showing how clothes could convey important messages. Including works by Hans Holbein the Younger, Nicholas Hilliard, Van Dyck and Peter Lely, the exhibition brought together over 60 paintings, as well as drawings, garments, jewellery, accessories and armour.

In June 2013 pupils from Barrow Hill Junior School worked with the members of Royal Collection Trust's Learning team to develop their own talks about a number of their favourite pieces from the In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion exhibition at The Queen's Gallery. The children visited the exhibition to choose a painting or object to research. Working with published author Bridget Crowley they drafted five scripts highlighting what it was about those objects and paintings that inspired them the most.

LGfL has worked in partnership with the Royal Collection Trust to enhance the audio files from the children’s work and create new videos highlighting the elements in the painting described in the narration.
